Moments of Motion

This was a semester-long project in a research and experimentation class. This project was centered around selecting a discipline of design that we found interesting and creating a project that could be done for 20 minutes a day. The point of separating the project into bouts of 20 minutes was to create the understanding that design takes time and to start to create the practice of designing on a continuous basis.

For my project, I decided to focus on motion design because it is a discipline that there are not many classes focused on at my university. I decided that I was going to use Adobe After Effects and follow tutorials to begin to understand all of the tools and possibilities for motion design with the tools that I had access to as a student. Each day, I created a different motion piece that focused on a different skill or technique, whether it be making a typographic motion design or a more 3D motion piece using the 3D effects feature within Adobe After Effects. Presented on this page is just a small selection of some of the most creative and effective uses of motion that I was able to create over the course of the semester.

Thinking back on this project, I feel that it was beneficial to create the discipline of remembering to create a piece of design work throughout the week and ensuring that each piece was different but also built on the others. I feel that this was also an effective way to learn different disciplines of design because, through repetition, you got used to how to design using the tools and software that you selected, which allowed you to see more clearly as you could include more creativity and individuality as you understood all of ht edifferent apsects fo the program and which effects created the desired result. All in all, I believe that this study of motion design helped me to learn more about a design discipline that is not given much individual attention.
